WI: 10/1 (1.1 / 20 over) Hetmyer 0, Fletcher 10
BRANDON KING GONE! GOLDEN DUCK! Kyle Jamieson prepares for his first ball, moves it a mile, and King misses the ball completely. Clean bowling!
WI: 10/0 (1/20 over) King 0, Fletcher 10
Not a bad start for the West Indies. 10 on the first over, as Fletcher’s first shot is a six on the midwicket. A pair of twos for Fletcher too.
New Zealand: 238/3 (20/20 overs) Taylor 0, Conway 65
Glenn Phillips out! It’s not an ideal ending for Phillips. He let out a cry before the ball collapsed in pain. It looked terrifyingly similar to what happened last week when he dislocated his kneecap while breaking a six. Physiotherapists come out to treat him and he continues to play bravely, but the next ball is ruled out when there is only one ball left in the game. It goes through an aerial cut shot to aim. 108 runs 51 balls and receives a well deserved standing ovation from the crowd. They crossed before he got fired, which means Taylor has to walk to the middle to see Conway face a ball. New Zealand set a whopping 238 total and the Windies really have a lot of work ahead of them now.
New Zealand: 228/2 (19/20 on) Phillips 100, Conway 64
PHILLIPS BRINGS A TON! What a hit, with only 46 balls, the fastest century of a Black Cap. Phillips lets out a triumphant cry as he smashes through the point to claim a single and his first century in T20 international cricket. 8 sixes and 8 fours. Conway also breaks a six on the last ball of the over when Oshane Thomas goes for 13 runs in that over. The latter is coming up, but the Black Caps are already comfortably seated with a solid total.
New Zealand: 217/2 (18/20 overs) Phillips 98, Conway 55
Phillips’ century will have to wait as it’s Conway’s time to shine. The Black Caps newcomer brings his top 50 in international cricket in just his second game as Black Cap, with a whopping six. He also mentions the 150-race partnership between him and Conway. A trio of six and two Conway fours in that change. The Windies are just bloody races and their bonus count doesn’t help them either.
New Zealand: 193/2 (17/20 overs) Phillips 98, Conway 31
Phillips is caught long, but the ball was clearly above the waist. The square-legged referee was unable to call the no-ball, so they go upstairs to overturn the expulsion. Cottrell really undoes his previous hard work with four extras on it. Phillips moves to two runs less than a century after three fours and six at that finish. Cottrell is on 25 in one more to forget.
New Zealand: 168/2 (16/20 above) Phillips 80, Conway 30
Keemo Paul’s finish slows New Zealand down a bit with just 8 runs conceded, however it’s mostly due to Phillips’ anxiety about going after another switch hit. The pair still manages to rotate the blow well.
New Zealand: 160/2 (15/20 overs) Phillips 73, Conway 29
Phillips plays a raised puck for a long time for another six. Still a good over for Cottrell, with nine runs. Most deliveries are well located.
New Zealand: 151/2 (14/20 above) Phillips 65, Conway 28
There’s no need for Phillips to look again. Cut a sleek, well-timed cut through coverage for four. The same goes for Conway, as he throws his hands at a good-length ball outside, sending it over the rope for six.
15:40 – New Zealand: 140/2 (13.2 / 20 over) Phillips 60, Conway 22
The covers are removed, a few laps of the oval with the ground crew burlap roll and the players are now returning to the center. Clear skies in Bay Oval now. Hopefully it’s the last of the strikes.
15:25 – New Zealand: 140/2 (13.2 / 20 over) Phillips 60, Conway 22
The umpires remove the bail as the showers have not stopped for some time. The tapas come out and we’ll have a little break in the game. The West Indies will undoubtedly embrace rest and head to the sheds to reunite. This could help curb the urge for Black Caps.
New Zealand: 137/2 (13/20 above) Phillips 60, Conway 19
Phillips rolls his 50! It absolutely lands on Allen with three sixes in a row! A mix of fancy shots and brutal punches, but they all look just as spectacular. End the change with a switch. He completely shifts his stance from right to left, hitting the air with a sweep for a four from a bounce. 24 of that more and New Zealand is scoring with ease right now.
New Zealand: 113/2 (12/20 overs) Phillips 38, Conway 18
Conway and Phillips mention their 50-race partnership. They both played well-balanced innings, capitalizing on the deep-field setting with some quick singles and doubles. Some field errors also do not help his cause. That ball could be covering with soap now that there’s a bit of moisture in the outfield. However, it is still a T20 and fireworks are expected. Phillips hits back over the head of Rovman Powell in his third six innings. Powell is going for nine runs.
New Zealand: 102/2 (11/20 above) Phillips 30, Conway 17
Phillips punishes Keemo Paul for this. Sloppy bowling with 18 runs awarded. Phillips hits another six with a throw shot between midwicket and deep square leg, as well as two fours in that over. Black Caps now starts to pick up some momentum.
New Zealand: 84/2 (10/20 on) Phillips 15, Conway 15
A quiet on Allen before this, conceding just three runs. However, this ended, Pollard going for 14 while Phillips and Conway rotate the strike well. Both players started playing some shots now with a Conway four and then a well hit six between deep square leg and Phillips thin leg late in the round. A bit of drizzle starting over could cause bowlers some pain as the ball absorbs some moisture on the surface.
New Zealand: 66/2 (8/20 above) Phillips 7, Conway 6
Kieron Pollard replaces Oshane Thomas. Conway and Phillips are now starting to find their place in the middle, playing some singles and doubles. Phillips also hits a four over the midwicket. He didn’t get it all, but he hit it hard enough to make the rope bounce.
New Zealand: 53/2 (6.2 / 20 over) Phillips 0, Conway 0
Another wicket for the Windies! Guptill goes, caught behind Fabian Allen’s bowling alley. The off course player throws the ball in the middle and gets a little spin on the green deck. Guptill looks to look behind the square leg, but gets the slightest edge and Pooran goes up on appeal. The referee does not like it, but the decision is reviewed and annulled. Guptill left for 34. Two speed windows and now the West Indies are in the driver’s seat.
New Zealand: 49/1 (5.4 / 20 about) Guptill 30, Conway 0
SHUTTER! A strange dismissal. Seifert jumps a few steps to his left and prepares a quick over the shoulder shot to the thin leg. He ruins it completely and hits the ball directly on his stumps. Oshane Thomas gets the first wicket of the game. A few balls earlier, Guptill hit another six with a clever ramp shot on the third man.
New Zealand: 41/0 (5/20 on) Guptill 23, Seifert 17
Keemo Paul replaces Cottrell. It goes for 15 runs when Guptill starts playing a few shots. A huge six more and a four for Guptill. A four for Seifert too.
New Zealand: 26/0 (4/20 above) Guptill 13, Seifert 12
Mayers has already been removed from the attack for now. Oshane Thomas picks up where he left off, however, with Seifert clearing the inner ring twice with two fours. Thomas is going for nine races.
New Zealand: 17/0 (3/20 above) Guptill 13, Seifert 3
Guptill survives an LBW appeal from Cottrell, they go to review the decision, but it is discovered that he is pitching out. Cottrell is only going for two at that end, applying the pressure early on from this end.
New Zealand: 15/0 (2/20 of) Guptill 12, Seifert 2
Kieron Pollard drops a trap on deck. I didn’t even touch it, but an easy early out went to ask the Windies. They can pay for that later. However, two fours by Guptill and Kyle Mayers are going for 11 on their first over.
New Zealand: 4/0 (1/20 of) Guptill 4, Seifert 0
A good opening for the West Indies just four runs away. Guptill goes aerieal early, hitting the spot for a limit. Other than that, relatively tight bowling from Sheldon Cottrell.
2:00 pm: After a long delay due to a wet garden, the covers have finally been removed and the launch has taken place. The West Indies win the draw and choose to bowl first in fairly cloudy and temperate conditions. We could be seeing some delays today with rain on the cards all day. Starting to drizzle again, but hopefully we can start soon.
Off to a great start last week with a five-wicket win over the West Indies, the Black Caps will look to wrap up the series today in what is the second game of their three-game T20 series.
One to watch today will be Devon Conway, who impressed in his first international appearance on Friday with a solid 41-race inning.
Express passenger Lockie Ferguson is another to watch, as the 29-year-old frequently reaches speeds in excess of 150 km / h and earns five in the first T20.
