One person died after a three-car accident involving a floating horse on the outskirts of Rangiora in North Canterbury this afternoon.
Several St John’s vehicles, firefighters and police rushed to the accident at the intersection of Plaskett and Oxford roads around 3.55pm.
A spokeswoman for St John said two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and two managers attended.
One person was rushed to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries, while two others were also hospitalized with moderate injuries.
Later, the police confirmed that one person had died.
One of the vehicles was towing a horse float, said a spokesman for Fire and Emergency New Zealand, which dispatched three crews from nearby Rangiora station.
The horse has been eliminated.
Wide curbs and detours were placed around the crash site but have now been lifted.
The 100 km / h stretch of road has suffered several serious accidents in recent years.
