Waikato police were at the scene of a car accident near Morrinsville on Saturday morning.
One person was trapped in a car for nearly an hour after it crashed into a power pole in rural Waikato, causing live power lines to drop overhead Saturday morning.
Fire and Emergency NZ said a team in the accident had to wait for the power to go out before they could remove one of the two people who were in the car. It is unclear how the second person was released.
Police said the accident occurred around 7 a.m. near the intersection of Piako Road and State Highway 26, near Morrinsville.
PowerCo, the company responsible for the power lines in the Matamata-Piako district, reported that it turned off the power at 7.47 am.

He said 74 properties were without power, but a field team was working to replace the downed power pole and expected power to be restored at 2 p.m.
PowerCo issued a safety message and said that in such cases, when vehicles hit power poles, it was important that drivers and passengers remain in the car.
“Powerco will then work with emergency services to turn off the power and ensure that it is safe to rescue those in the vehicle,” the company said in a statement.
Waikato Police Sergeant Major Pete Simpson previously said there were two people in the car when it crashed into the power pole.
The driver of the car was taken to Waikato hospital with moderate injuries and the passenger had minor injuries.
Simpson said the car appeared to have lost control before hitting the power pole, but police are investigating the circumstances that led to the accident.
“It is a straight but undulating road. It is too early to say what was involved at this stage. “
