Police are investigating after a fight broke out between students from various schools in Christchurch.

The incident occurred at the Papanui Toc H Athletics Club, based at Papanui High School, around 5:20 p.m. on November 18.

“A group of young people from several different schools had reportedly gotten into a fight,” a police spokeswoman said.

One person was attacked while trying to intervene and was taken to hospital by a relative.

An investigation was underway and police had “firm lines of investigation” to pursue, the spokeswoman said.

Papanui High School principal Jeff Smith said he was aware of the incident, but there were no Papanui students involved and that the school had no direct connection to anyone who was.

“There were several young people present from various schools. Our deans and [senior leadership team] they are reviewing the information they receive to support the process. “

Shirley Boys’ High School principal Tim Grocott said a sophomore at his school was a member of the track club.

“We have spoken with the student who was aware of some concerning behavior, but as far as we know, there were no other Shirley Boys’ High School students present.”

Other outlets reported that someone broke his arm during the fight, but Grocott said he was not in a position to confirm those details.
