There are two new cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday, both in managed isolation facilities.

There are no new cases in the community, but the Health Ministry said further action is now being taken regarding the case of an Air New Zealand crew member who tested positive on Sunday.

Of the two new cases announced Tuesday, one arrived on Nov.17 from India via the United Arab Emirates and tested positive around the third day of his stay in controlled isolation.

Both are now in quarantine at Auckland’s isolation facility, the Jet Park Hotel.

It is also investigating how an Air New Zealand crew member, who tested positive for Covid-19 in China, contracted the virus.

The staff member tested negative for the virus in New Zealand on November 18, but upon arrival in Shanghai on November 22, he tested positive.

Air New Zealand said the person was fine and had no Covid-19 symptoms; all other crew members tested negative.

He said the positive case would remain isolated while Air New Zealand and the Health Ministry worked with Chinese authorities to get the person home.

When they returned to New Zealand, the crew would follow the ministry’s instructions on isolation and further testing, Air New Zealand said.

Three close contacts of the crew member have been identified in Auckland and are now self-isolating. Two others are being investigated as close contacts.

“As a precaution, we are following public health protocols as if it were a confirmed case in New Zealand,” the Ministry said.

Also being investigated are the locations that the crew member visited in the relevant time period prior to departing on his flight, and anyone who went to the Animates Manukau pet supply store on November 21 between 1:22 p.m. and 14:11 should be tested, said the ministry.

The crew member also visited a few other stores briefly, and staff were asked to self-isolate at home or get tested for symptoms.

As more information becomes available, the Auckland Regional Public Health Service may contact other locations, the ministry said.

There are currently 53 active cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand. The total number of confirmed cases is 1,675.
