The US President’s legal team was engulfed in an uproar on Monday (NZT) when two Trump attorneys, Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis, issued a statement that abruptly distanced the campaign from a third attorney, Sidney Powell.
Giuliani, Ellis and Powell appeared together at a news conference last week, when they made a series of unsubstantiated allegations about the integrity of the election.
Powell, in particular, has spoken out by launching some of the more complicated claims, alleging a conspiracy involving “communist money,” the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, and an algorithm that favors Democrats.

At the beginning of Friday’s press conference, Giuliani (left) said that he, Ellis, Powell (right) and other attorneys present were “representing President Trump.”
“Sidney Powell is practicing law on his own,” Giuliani and Ellis said in their statement. “She is not a member of Trump’s legal team. Nor is she the president’s attorney in a personal capacity.”

At the beginning of Friday’s press conference, Giuliani said that he, Ellis, Powell and other attorneys present were “representing President Trump and we representing the Trump campaign.”
Ellis presented the group as “an elite strike force team working on behalf of the president and the campaign to make sure our Constitution is protected.”
Two Trump advisers, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations, said the president did not like the coverage Powell was receiving. Fox News the expert Tucker Carlson and others, and that several allies reached out to tell him that he had gone too far.
The advisers also said that she argued with Giuliani and others in recent days.
Trump believed she was causing more harm than helping, an official said. “I was too crazy even for the president,” said a campaign official.
Powell did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
