Flooding is possible on the north and south islands later this week

The forecast of heavy rain for central New Zealand later this week could lead to flooding in parts of the northern and southern islands.

Forecaster WeatherWatch.co.nz warns that places like parts of the interior of the North Island, around the Bay of Plenty, South Waikato, Taranaki and also around Nelson could receive a month of rain in just seven days.

Floods are also possible on both islands, according to the weather service.

The heavy rain is due to a low formation in the Tasman Sea during Tuesday that crumbles during Wednesday and Thursday as it crosses New Zealand, according to Weather Watch.

People in areas from Waikato, the Bay of Plenty to the upper South Island are much more likely to need to take out their umbrellas from Tuesday night through Thursday morning.

Sites protected from heavy landfills include Northland, Gisborne, Southland, Otago, and South Canterbury.

However, rain relief may not reach the possibly most needy region like Auckland, which is in dire need of water with water restrictions in place as May is right on the cusp of heavier falls.

Instead, Auckland could experience strong winds and even gales from the north and west, which could lead to some power outages due to falling trees.
