Police have named the man who died in a morning crash in North Canterbury on Thursday.

Grant Raymond Dellow, 55, of Kaiapoi, was killed when his car collided with a tree on Omihi Rd, about four miles south of the Greta Valley settlement, just before 5.30 a.m.

Police expressed their condolences to Dellow’s family and friends.

Early indications were that he had been unable to make a moderate curve while traveling south on the stretch of State Highway 1 and crashed into a large tree on the left side of the highway, the rural area commander of the police said. Canterbury, Inspector Peter Cooper.

There were some light rains in the area and the road was wet at the time of the accident.

On Thursday, Cooper said that weather, fatigue, alcohol, drugs and speed were potential factors being analyzed. There have been no further updates on the cause of the crash, only that the queries are ongoing.

The stretch of highway where the accident occurred was not considered a particularly “high risk” crash area, Cooper said.

However, the accident that took Dellow’s life came just over two weeks after another fatal accident on the same stretch of road.
