The front wheel of the motorcycle was cut by the impact of the crash.

A motorcyclist was killed after colliding with a lamp post in downtown New Plymouth on Sunday morning.

The impact of the collision on lower Carrington St dislodged the front wheel of the Harley Davidson.

A nearby resident, Joanne Sutherland, said she heard a loud bang from her kitchen.

“I looked up and saw the light pole swing,” he said.

Sutherland said he ran out to see the rider sprawled in the middle of the road near the bike with the front wheel loose.

“I ran to him and asked if he was okay.”

She said that although the motorcyclist was visibly injured, “he was breathing and raised his thumb.”

He returned home to call emergency services while two women gave the passenger CPR, he said.

“The women were talking to him while they were giving him CPR.”

New Plymouth Police Sgt. Royston Betteridge said it was too early to know if the cause of the accident was speed related.

The rider was admitted to Taranaki Base Hospital in serious condition and died of his injuries, a police spokesman said.

The Serious Accident Unit attended the scene and there were delays while the work was being carried out.

Carrington St was blocked to traffic as police, New Zealand Fire and Emergency services and St John Ambulance treated the injured and removed the bicycle from the center of the road.
