Hundreds of people have come forward on social media with allegations of misconduct by C1 Espresso owner Sam Crofskey.
Crofskey has rejected specific claims, but accepted general responsibility.
“It is very distressing to hear all this. It’s not something anyone wants to wake up to, ”Crofskey said.
The allegations came after a woman posted on a University of Canterbury Student Association Facebook page, where she detailed her interview experience and brief time at the cafe and warned others not to apply for a job there.
For many, however, it was too late.
Paige Hookham said Crofskey had asked her in a job interview why she had finished high school early.
“I told her, and it was a personal reason, not just because she wanted to drop out of school, and she basically explained to me that she was dumb and dumb and that she would never get anywhere in life,” she said. .
However, Crofskey said “there’s no way I’m calling someone dumb.”
Hookham said she was later questioned about her mental health.
“It was just really tough and how I would never hire someone with a mental illness and that I have to go and fix my head is, quote, what he said,” he said.
Crofskey replied that “it was not an interview question what I would do.”
Former employee Brooke Rich worked at C1 Espresso for three weeks before leaving, as she felt degraded by the experience.
“I almost broke a glass and he was like, ‘Don’t do this, you’re embarrassing me and my coffee and you’re embarrassing the customers,’” Rich said.
Since then, the original Facebook post has received thousands of comments, many of which allege similar experiences.
The situation has taken its toll on Crofskey, who said “he’s not a monster.”
“I get enough notifications asking me to burn in hell,” he said.
But those Crofksey has dealt with say it has taken its toll on them too.
“It definitely destroyed my confidence quite a bit,” Hookham said.
Hookham said he wished he had spoken earlier so others wouldn’t have to suffer.
