Police said emergency services received a report around 10.30am Saturday that there were people in distress at sea in Cornwallis.

A spokeswoman for St John said two patients were transported by separate helicopters to Starship Children’s Hospital and Auckland City Hospital.

One child was in critical condition and the other patient, an adult, was in serious condition, he said.

Cornwallis is a popular fishing spot, located on the Karangāhape peninsula.

In October 2019, a French woman named Marie risked her own life to save two children from drowning on the beach.

He jumped into the water to save them as the current carried them away.

In April 2018, a man in his 20s had been pulled from the water, unconscious, by members of the public.

It had been launched from the beach pier into shallow water. It was unclear if he had jumped or fallen from it.

In 2009, one man drowned and another was saved while fishing off the dock.
