The 2021 and 2023 South Island Masters Games will be held in Marlborough and will bring more than 2,500 participants and supporters to the region.

The 2021 event will be the games’ 20th year and will run over two weekends in October.

South Island Masters Games President Thomas Nation said they were pleased to partner with the Marlborough District Council to “provide a great celebration of the sport of masters.”

“There is amazing passion and support for this event, and research confirmed that the event would be well supported if it were held in the Marlborough region,” said Nation.

“It is easily accessible, has excellent facilities and the climate is perfect.”

Research conducted after the 2018 event in Timaru showed an economic benefit to the region of $ 1.6 million and included 2,655 additional bed nights and $ 58,000 distributed to local sports clubs.

Local sports clubs would benefit from the distribution of entrance fees, Nation said.

“Local sports clubs and their creativity and hospitality are an integral part of the success of the South Island Masters Games. The event just couldn’t happen without them, ”he said.

Marlborough District Council Mayor John Leggett said the deal was great news for a number of sectors, including retail and hospitality, which had been affected by the current economic climate.

“They will benefit enormously from the games that will take place in Marlborough,” Leggett said.

Marlborough Football General Manager Andrea Smith-Scott was eager to host the teachers’ soccer games and encouraged participants to explore the South Summit during their stay.

The 2021 event will take place over two weekends from October 15-24.
