An elegant century of Rachin Ravindra has put New Zealand A in a strong position on the stumps on the first day of their three-day match against the West Indies.
The home team won the draw and chose to hit in the first international cricket match on New Zealand soil since the Covid-19 pandemic paralyzed the sporting world.
At the end of the final session at the John Davies Oval in Queenstown, New Zealand, a captain Cole McConchie called out his batters with a statement at 308-3, presumably with Saturday’s rain forecast in mind, and the West Indies limped to 17-1 for stumps.
Will Young, a member of the Ravindra and Black Caps test team, saw the first 15 overs in a 43-race partnership before Young was strangled in the side of the leg in a strong grip from Shane Dowrich at the Chemar Holder bowling alley. .

Young hit five fours on a striking 27 hit.
Then Ravindra was joined by another test hitter, Henry Nicholls, and the pair got to lunch without a hitch (81-1) before batting the entire second session, to guide New Zealand A to 198-1 at the break of the tea.
Ravindra hit triple digits shortly after the game resumed, lifting his century by 173 balls and 254 minutes.
His 160-run partnership for the second wicket ended shortly after when Nicholls was caught behind, from Raymon Reifer’s bowling alley, for a spirited 76 of just 108 balls.
Only 24 runs were added to the team’s score before Ravindra finished off a shot through Kemar Roach’s throat on the fine leg from Alzarri Joseph’s bowling alley to leave New Zealand A at 227-3.
The Wellington Firebirds starter hit 10 fours and two sixes on his 187-ball hit that ultimately ended at 112.
Devon Conway, who became eligible for the New Zealand selection in August and who was considered unfortunate by many to miss the test team, was next and solidified the New Zealand Athletics position with an undefeated 46.
Joe Carter was also stranded on 41, not the statement.
Quick Central Districts Blair Tickner hit John Campbell for four with his starting teammate Kraigg Brathwaite without two and Darren Bravo undefeated with eight late in the game.
The West Indies are still behind New Zealand A by 291 runs.
