The Minister of Social Development and Employment, Carmel Sepuloni, announced today that the emergency benefit will be available from December 1.
Temporary visa holders struggling due to Covid-19 were previously supported by a temporary program delivered by Te Tari Taiwhenua, Department of Home Affairs, and the New Zealand Red Cross.
The Red Cross program is scheduled to end on November 30 after having supported more than 12,300 people with basic needs like food and shelter since July 1, when it started, Sepuloni said.
“We want to make sure that the most needy and eligible people continue to receive support with their basic needs while trying to return home as soon as possible if they cannot find suitable employment,” Sepuloni said.
“Despite the fact that job prospects and the frequency of international flights have improved a lot since we left the confinement, some people with temporary visas still cannot return to their country of origin and are in difficulties due to the loss of jobs. , illnesses or other unforeseen events. “
The emergency benefit will be available until the end of February.
Temporary visa holders who are granted the emergency benefit are expected to actively seek work or a way to return home.
Eligibility will also depend on a person’s income and assets.
“I asked MSD to match people with suitable temporary employment opportunities, with a particular focus on places where we have a shortage of labor, including seasonal work, whenever possible.”
Applications from December 1 can be made by visiting Labor and Income at the nearest Ministry of Social Development office and booking an appointment in person.
