This section of SH1 in North Canterbury has been described as “one of the most notorious highways” in the region by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Speeds will be reduced by up to 40 km / h on a dangerous stretch of State Highway 1 (SH1) in North Canterbury, where six people have died.

The New Zealand Transportation Agency (NZTA) will reduce speed limits on SH1 between Waikuku and Lineside Rd starting December 15.

Six people died and 33 were seriously injured in crashes on the stretch of the highway between 2009 and 2018.

Sections of the road in Waikuku, which currently have speed limits of 100 km / h or 80 km / h, will be changed to 60 km / h. Two sections of the highway near Pegasus and the southern tip of Woodend will be reduced from 100km / h to 80km / h.

An electronic signal at the Pineacres intersection, which currently slows to 70 km / h when traffic enters the highway, will be reduced to 60 km / h.

NZTA director of regional relations Jim Harland said the route was “one of the most notorious roads in Canterbury.”

“No crash that causes death or serious injury is acceptable, so it is important that we take every opportunity to address risk.”

How fast a vehicle was going when a crash occurred could be the difference between “pulling away or getting carried away,” he said.

The changes come after consultation with the community and road user groups between August and September last year, and engagement with the police and industrial organizations.
