The neighbor of an AUT student caught Covid-19, says the Ministry of Health.
The neighbor was confirmed as a new case over the weekend and is now known as “case E” in the quarantine group. Genome testing indicates that his infection is from the same lineage as the student AUT.
“This tells us that case E contracted the virus from case D.”
Officials are still working to investigate how the AUT student, known as “Case D,” contracted the virus from a Defense Forces soldier who visited a cafe 82 meters from where the student worked.
“Research is now focused on identifying the exposure event that links the two people, if possible.”
Officials have identified 11 close contacts from Case E and nine of them have already returned a negative test with two results still pending. Case E, which was identified as a close contact for Case D, was already in quarantine when it was confirmed as a case.
“Our thanks to all the individuals involved in this group, including the cases, who have greatly supported the efforts to identify and trace close contacts and limit any further spread.”
A new case of managed isolation
There is a new case of Covid-19 in isolation managed today.
There are no new community cases.
Today’s case arrived from Singapore on November 11 and tested positive around the third day of his time in controlled isolation. They will be transferred to the Auckland quarantine facility.
A previously confirmed case of managed isolation has been reclassified as under investigation as it is a historical suspect case.
There are 58 active cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand.
After a peak of more than 10,500 tests processed on Saturday, 5,298 tests were processed yesterday, bringing the total processed to 1,184,885.
The ministry continues to ask Kiwis to continue scanning QR codes with the Covid Tracer app.
“We recommend everyone to keep a complete record of your movements: scan the QR code when you see one on the screen, and if you are at a friend’s house or somewhere that doesn’t have a code, create a manual journal entry.
“It’s a quick and easy thing that we can all do to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in Aotearoa.”
Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins will join the Prime Minister at the post-Cabinet press conference at 4pm.
During the weekend there was a new case of Covid-19 connected to the group of the Defense Forces, but the person was already in controlled isolation.
There were no new cases in the community.
Testing is recommended for anyone showing symptoms of Covid-19. There are two pop-up testing centers in Auckland Central and community testing centers throughout the region and people can also get tested at their GP or the nearest after-hours clinic for free.
