The Napier City Council is asking residents to avoid all but essential travel to flush toilets only when necessary and limit all water use as flash flooding overwhelms roads and the sewage system.

The council warned that it cannot continue to report the number of roads that were flooded tonight and decided instead to give a blanket warning.

“The City Council is receiving constant reports of roads that are impassable and we will not be able to continue reporting on individual roads as resources are diverted to manage the situation,” a statement read on the council’s Facebook page.

“Based on what we know at this time and the continued rains, we should discourage any non-essential travel.

According to RNZ, dozens of residents are being evacuated from their homes as floodwaters rise and sirens from emergency services can be heard throughout the city.

MetService is also forecasting thunderstorms for the region.

New Zealand Fire and Emergency Area Manager Ken Cooper says emergency services are dealing with more than 150 calls, mostly in Napier CBD with shops and offices flooding the water.

Several older people have been evacuated from their homes to stay with relatives, Cooper says.

Heavy rain has also caused several landslides on Napier Hill, with assessment by the Hawke’s Bay Urban Search and Rescue Team.

Hastings has called in two additional trucks to help.
