Airbnb says it has suspended more than 300 listings in New Zealand as “part of a concerted effort to crack down on ads that violate” its party and event policies.
Some of the suspensions were the result of complaints from neighbors about behavior at a property that is listed with the company.
The move follows a policy change in August that imposed a global ban on parties and events on Airbnb listings, including a 16 limit on the number of people staying on a listing.
At the time, the company linked the policy change to the Covid-19 pandemic, in addition to saying that its community standards prohibited members from creating a nuisance that would disrupt the surrounding neighborhood.

Airbnb announced plans to end the parties a year ago after five people were shot dead at a Halloween night party, attended by more than 100 people, at a home in Orinda, near San Francisco in the US. USA
In this country, an Upper Hutt owner was furious after a place he rented through Airbnb was used for an all-night party, prompting noise complaints from neighbors. The owner said he had to evict revelers from the property in the morning, cleanup took three people for seven hours, and the damage had to be repaired.
And last summer, Taupō residents raised concerns about loud parties at Airbnb rentals.
Derek Nolan, Airbnb’s head of public policy for New Zealand and Australia, said in a statement Saturday that the suspensions targeted a “very small minority” of hosts who had been warned about hosting responsibilities or had violated the policies.
“Our message to everyone who uses Airbnb couldn’t be clearer; Bad behavior has no place at Airbnb and those who willfully violate our policies face removal from our platform, ”he said.
“While negative incidents are extremely rare on Airbnb, our team continues to work diligently to make them even rarer. We remain committed to upholding our community standards, which require everyone at Airbnb to behave in a way that is safe and respectful of the local community. “
Airbnb said it encouraged neighbors to raise concerns or complaints about specific listings. Concerns raised by neighbors using their neighborhood support page had led to some suspensions.
