A nurse accused of killing eight babies and trying to kill 10 others at a hospital in the North West of England was taken into custody today, a day after she was charged with murder and attempted murder.

Lucy Letby, 30, was placed in pre-trial detention after appearing via video link during a short 10-minute hearing in Warrington Magistrates Court.

He sat down behind a desk, next to his lawyer, and confirmed his name, date of birth and address.

No statements were made and Letby is scheduled to appear at Chester Crown Court tomorrow.

Letby was arrested on Wednesday following an investigation into deaths in the neonatal unit at Countess of Chester Hospital, south of Liverpool.

The deaths refer to the period between June 2015 and June 2016.

The police launched an investigation into the deaths of several babies at the hospital in May 2017.

Letby was arrested Wednesday for the third time in connection with the deaths.

She was previously arrested in 2018 and 2019, and both times she was released on bail pending further investigation without charge.
