Craig Petrie was an avid athlete, competing in triathlon and ironman events.
A triathlete who represented New Zealand after emigrating from Wales has been remembered as a family man who loved the outdoors after he was killed while cycling in Canterbury.
Craig Petrie died at Christchurch Hospital early Thursday after being hit by a car Wednesday afternoon.
The accident happened on State Highway 73, near Creyke Rd in Darfield, around 3.15pm.
Petrie was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in critical condition, while another person with minor injuries was treated at the scene.

“Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones,” police said after his death.
Canterbury triathlete and coach John Newsom met Petrie in 2015 after he moved to New Zealand from Wales and coached him for several years.
He said Petrie’s passion for the outdoors led him to participate in triathlons.
He was a popular member of the local triathlon community and competed in multiple ironman events in New Zealand and abroad.
“I had the privilege of guiding Craig through several of his race preparations where you could guarantee he would put it all on the line.”
Newsom said Petrie represented New Zealand at the 2018 World Long Course Championships in Denmark, where he swam 3 km, cycled 120 km and ran 30 km.
“The local triathlon community extends its condolences to Craig’s young family,” he said.
The serious accident unit of the police is investigating the circumstances of the accident.
There have been at least 26 deaths on Canterbury’s roads so far this year, 16 fewer than at the same time last year, according to accident data from the New Zealand Transport Agency.
