What was intended to be the first major cultural festival in Auckland since the beginning of the year was once again postponed due to Covid-19.

The K-festival, which was expected to draw up to 10,000 people, was due to take place tomorrow at the Eventfinda Stadium on the North Shore.

Celebrating all things Korean, the festival highlights cultural food, music, entertainment, and dance.

It was scheduled to take place in March, but was postponed due to Covid-19.

Tomorrow’s event would have been the first major cultural concert in Auckland since earlier this year, when the pandemic resulted in the cancellation of the annual Pasifika Festival, Auckland High Schools Polyfest, Diwali and the Lantern Festival.

K-fest organizers made the announcement via social media last night and could not hide their anguish.

“We are saddened to share the unfortunate news that the K-festival has been postponed until further notice.

“We understand that today’s news about community broadcasting in the Auckland CBD has been a surprise and concern to you.

“We have spent a lot of time and effort preparing for the event, but your safety is the most important thing to us.”

At the end of last week, one of the organizers acknowledged how things could still change very quickly.

Eunsol Choi told the Herald: “Every day we say a little prayer and keep our fingers crossed that we do not go up from alert level 1 so that the K festival can move on.”

Yesterday, the K-festival organizers said that although the government had not yet announced new rules on the number of people allowed in public gatherings, they had decided to postpone the event anyway as a security measure.

“We wanted to take the initiative to follow the New Zealand government standard and regulations to keep the New Zealand community safe.”

Meanwhile, the organizers of the Aotearoa Music Awards to be held on Sunday are awaiting news from the government before deciding whether to proceed.

“We are waiting for the government announcement to better understand how contained this new case is,” a spokesman said.

“We will have an update after today’s announcement.

“Of course, the health and safety of our New Zealand artists, staff and public is of the utmost importance to the Aotearoa Music Awards and we will follow all instructions from the government going forward.

“If the alert levels change, we will work on a solution that allows us to celebrate Aotearoa musicians while respecting all government restrictions.”
