A cyclist who was seriously injured after being hit by a car in Canterbury died.

The accident occurred on State Highway 73, near Creyke Rd in Darfield, west of Christchurch, at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday.

A helicopter, two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle were dispatched to the scene, and a patient was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in critical condition, St John said.

The cyclist, understood as a man who lived in the locality, died during the night.

“Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones,” police said Thursday.

A second person suffered minor injuries in the accident and was treated on the side of the road. The police major accident unit is investigating.

There have been at least 26 deaths on Canterbury’s roads so far this year, 16 fewer than at the same time last year, according to accident data from the New Zealand Transport Agency.
