Kamala Harris delivered her first speech as vice president-elect Saturday night in an impeccable white suit, a likely nod to 20th-century suffragettes who worked to give women the right to vote.

Harris took the stage with the song Work that by Mary J. Blige, the theme song that has literally been featured hundreds of times since the Democratic primary.

But Saturday night, it was her first melodic ride as the first African American and South Asian American woman to be elected Vice President of the United States.

“While I may be the first woman in this office, I won’t be the last,” Harris said to cheers outside the Chase Center in Wilmington, Delaware. “Every girl who is watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.”

Women in Congress emphasized wearing white suffragettes during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union addresses.

Last year, the House Democratic Women’s Caucus organized the effort. The choice of color honors the women’s suffrage movement that led to the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which gave women the right to vote.

Hillary Clinton also wore white when she accepted the presidential nomination at the 2016 Democratic National Convention honoring the women’s suffrage movement.

And Geraldine Ferraro was wearing white when she accepted the nomination to become the first vice presidential candidate of a major American political party at the 1984 Democratic convention.

“All the women who have worked to secure and protect the right to vote for over a century, 100 years ago with the 19th Amendment, 55 years ago with the Voting Rights Act, and now in 2020 with a new generation of women in our country that cast their votes and continued their fight for the fundamental right to vote and be heard, “Harris said Saturday.

“Tonight I reflect on his struggle, his determination and the strength of his vision to see what can be alleviated by what has been. And I stand on his shoulders.

“And what a testament to Joe’s character is that he had the audacity to break down one of the most substantial barriers in our country and select a woman as his vice president.”

The collar of Harris’s suit may also have been symbolic.

The tie, a loose tie around the neck of the shirt, first made fashionable by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, was worn two years ago in Sweden as a sign of protest.

First lady Melania Trump wore a blouse with one at a presidential debate in 2016.

Two years later, fashion wrote about how it had become a political statement.

“Women and men began to wear tie-neck blouses in support of Sara Danius, who resigned as permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy (recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature) and in protest at the system that allowed her removal in the aftermath a #MeToo scandal involving a man linked to the academy ” fashion reported in 2018.
