A food delivery service is warning customers not to eat one of their dinners after fresh fish was found to contain levels of histamine poisonous to humans.

Hello Fresh apologizes to customers and advises them not to eat portions of horse mackerel included in the ingredients to make a coconut fish dish on this week’s menu.

In a message to customers who ordered the meal kit, the company warns people not to eat the fish.

“Our supplier has just advised, as of Monday, November 9, 2020, there are high levels of histamine in the” White Fish (Horse Mackerel) “that he received this week in the recipe ‘Coconut Fish and Makrut Lima Sauce with Jasmine Rice & Crispy Shallots’. As a precautionary measure, we recommend that you do not consume the product. “

According to New Zealand Food Safety, histamine poisoning occurs when fish is not cooled properly. If this happens in certain fish, including horse mackerel, it can be toxic to humans.

People who eat infected fish are likely to experience a number of undesirable symptoms, such as tingling and burning around the mouth, facial flushing, diarrhea, rash, nausea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, dizziness, palpitations, headaches, and possibly difficulty respiratory.

Symptoms can last up to 12 hours, but there are no long-term effects.

The company has apologized to customers for the “inconvenience.”

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and will reimburse you for the cost of the ingredient. We want to assure you that the safety and quality of our ingredients is our top priority.”

Meals are delivered to your home nationwide on Sundays.

The company provides a phone number if people have already eaten the food and are concerned.

Hello Fresh has been contacted for comment.
