Students at two Wellington schools are considered to be at “very low risk” for Covid-19, after two students were linked to the November group, Chief Health Officer Dr. Ashley Bloomfield said Monday.

A Boulcott Primary student and a Hutt Intermediate student, both in Lower Hutt, were household contacts of the second Defense Force worker, who tested positive for the virus over the weekend but both tested negative for Covid-19 .

The Defense Forces worker, the students and one other person are now in isolation for 14 days.

Students and school staff had to be on the lookout for symptoms but were considered to be at low risk of contracting the virus, Bloomfield said during Monday’s briefing.

“School students and staff don’t need to be screened or isolated,” he said.

“They will only be asked to watch for symptoms and get tested if they develop symptoms. But they are considered to be very low risk since both students have already tested negative. “

Boulcott Primary director Stu Davenport said the Health Ministry contacted him Sunday night.

At school “everything was as usual” and he was pleased with the prompt response from the ministry.

The parents had been given a letter warning that they did not need to be tested or self-isolate.

The Defense Force worker, called Case B, had his positive result announced on Sunday.

They are a close contact for Case A, a worker at an Auckland quarantine facility who contracted the virus at work.

Case B had more than 50 close contacts and of those 32 gave a negative result.

Three of them were household contacts, including students, who had tested negative.

Investigations are underway on the source of the infection, Bloomfield said.

Meanwhile, four new cases of the virus were detected in recent returnees in managed isolation facilities, and there were no new cases in the community.
