An attempt by US President Donald Trump’s campaign team to smear the “lamestream media” hit a snag this morning when communications director Tim Murtaugh posted a tweet that he said showed exactly why the media ” they don’t select the president. “
Murtaugh shared an image of the kitchen in the “Team Trump HQ” from a cover of the Washington Times on November 8, 2000 with the headline “PRESIDENT GORE” and the statement that “Florida pushes Gore to the top with most naked “.
It was supposed to be proof that the media was wrong, because George W. Bush won the election and the state of Florida after only 537 votes separated the couple.
“A reminder that the media does not select the president,” Murtaugh wrote.
But the newspaper cover he shared, which had been taped to the walls of Team Trump headquarters, was itself fake news.
In a spectacular own goal for Trump’s team, Murtaugh hastily deleted the tweet, but not before the damage was done.
The Washington Times shared Murtaugh’s now-deleted tweet, correcting the record.
“Those photos have been tampered with,” he wrote on Twitter. “The Washington Times never ran a headline for ‘President Gore.’
“We also wish to add that Mr. Murtaugh has been officially notified by email of this error.”
The accumulation was immediate.
Trump himself continued his attack on the media this morning, tweeting: “Since when does Lamestream Media call who our next president will be? We’ve all learned a lot in the last two weeks!”
He also continues to refuse to concede defeat to President-elect Joe Biden, who was declared the winner Sunday.
“I WON THIS ELECTION, BY FAR,” he tweeted yesterday in capital letters.
Trump tweeted guest quotes on Fox News morning shows to reinforce his unsubstantiated claims that the election result was fraudulent.
“We think these people are thieves. Big city machines are corrupt. This was a stolen election. The best pollster in Britain wrote this morning that this was clearly a stolen election, that it is impossible to imagine that Biden surpassed Obama in some of these states. ” “said former Republican politician Newt Gingrich, in a statement repeated with approval by the president.
