Emergency services searching for a missing swimmer on Mt Maunganui have not been able to find him, but may expand their search area tomorrow morning depending on the weather.

A police spokeswoman said that today’s operation was unsuccessful and the rough seas proved challenging.

“The search is expected to resume at dawn tomorrow and the team will reassess the weather conditions before deciding to expand the search area.”

The man was unable to return to shore just after 10 a.m. Saturday after swimming with two others in Marine Parade.

Sheriff Kurt Waugh said the search yesterday and today, using police, members of the Surf Life Saving Club, the Coast Guard and a rescue helicopter, was unsuccessful.

Police search and rescue personnel were being assisted today by members of the Surf Life Saving Club from Mt Maunganui, Papamoa and Omanu using inflatable rescue boats.

Sea conditions were challenging with waves of up to a meter and a half that caused visibility problems for seekers.

Anyone who sees something of interest that can help with the search should contact the police.
