Two members of Defense Force personnel are at the center of the latest community outbreak of Covid-19 in New Zealand, with one of them traveling from Auckland to Wellington after becoming infected.
A new case of community transmission was reported today – a close contact of the Auckland quarantine worker first reported by the Ministry on Friday.
There were also five new cases of Covid-19 in controlled isolation in New Zealand today.
It has been confirmed today that the two community cases revealed in recent days are personnel of the Defense Force, one civilian and the other military, and that the House of Defense, where 1,300 people work, has been closed for a deep cleaning.
The Deputy Chief of the Defense Force, Vice Air Marshal (AVM), Tony Davies, said that the first positive case, announced by the Ministry of Health (MoH) on Friday, is a military man who has been working in the quarantine facilities in Auckland.
“The second case is a civilian employee who met with that military in Auckland on Wednesday, before the military tested positive. The Ministry of Health’s contact tracing process identified the civilian as a close contact of the military and subsequently tested positive. .
“The civilian is based at the NZDF Defense House headquarters in Wellington and traveled from Auckland to Wellington on flight NZ457 on Thursday evening. They sat in row 23 and contacted all passengers sitting in two seats in all directions were asked to take the test and self-isolate until November 19. Their homes have also been advised to self-isolate until passengers receive a negative test. “
AVM Davies said the Defense House, which employs about 1,300 people, had been closed for a deep cleaning.
“All staff would work from home until further notice. Other Defense House-based organizations were being informed and their staff would also work from home.”
In a statement, the Health Ministry said other attendees at the Auckland meeting, where the two cases found have been identified, are isolated.
The ministry said anyone else on the flight who is concerned about his health can call Healthline.
The five cases of managed isolation include:
- A case that arrived from Italy via Hawaii on November 3
- Two cases that arrived from the United Arab Emirates, but did not travel together, on November 3
- A case that arrived from Romania via Doha and Australia on November 3
- A case that arrived from Germany via the United Arab Emirates on November 5 and was transferred directly to the quarantine facility after appearing symptomatic.
The total number of active cases is 48.
The total number of confirmed cases is now 1,626.
