Just over 7,400 people reported feeling the 4.5-magnitude earthquake, which struck 20 kilometers southwest of Christchurch near Rolleston at 7.26 am on Friday.
A 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck central Christchurch on Friday morning.
According to GeoNet, the moderate earthquake occurred at a depth of 9 kilometers, 20 kilometers southwest of Christchurch, near Rolleston. It was initially reported as magnitude 4.1, but was updated shortly thereafter.
Just over 7,400 people reported feeling the earthquake on GeoNet, and the majority of respondents said the shaking was mild.
Several Cantabrians took to social media to say they had felt the shaking, and one person said they had “tremors and rattles but no damage” at their home.

New World Rolleston Operations Manager Glen White said he and other staff members were concerned that the earthquake could have been stronger.
“It was a good rattle, but nothing fell off the shelves. It was a pretty decent hit first, and we always thought, ‘Is it going to continue?’ So that was the main concern.
“The staff get really nervous after this kind of thing these days, especially after we haven’t had one in a while.”
New Zealand Fire and Emergency spokesperson Riwai Grace said at 9 a.m. that crews had not been called for any earthquake-related damage.
