An end-of-the-year prank at one of Christchurch’s top secondary schools could have had “tragic consequences,” says the principal.
A group of Year 13 students at Christchurch Boys’ High School (CBHS) chased and threw water balloons and eggs at two Year 11 students just before 1:00 pm yesterday.
The stunt resulted in one of the children being chased onto a road outside the school, where a vehicle struck his foot.
Another student was assaulted, CBHS principal Nic Hill said.
Hill said he was lucky that no one was seriously injured.
“We are fortunate not to face tragic consequences,” Hill said in an email to parents and caregivers yesterday.
Hill was “appalled” by the “disrespectful” behavior.
All the students were called to an assembly this morning.
Subsequently, a group went to Hill’s office to apologize for his role in the incidents.
Hill said he is not ruling out “serious consequences.”
“The students have received fair warning,” he said.
“Despite ongoing messages calling for an end to this type of behavior, a core group of students have blatantly ignored it and it has let us down,” said the principal.
“We have asked the boys to be respectful and decent, and I am appalled at the behavior of a group [yesterday].
“This behavior must stop. It does not reflect the values of the school, and this is the message that will be communicated.”
