Cattle carrier Ocean Drover is in New Zealand to transport 8,000 cows on a two-week trip to China for breeding.
It is the first living export ship to dock in the country since Gulf Livestock 1 sank in a typhoon in the East China Sea on September 2, killing 6,000 animals and 41 people, including two New Zealanders.
However, many in Timaru objected today outside the port, arguing that live cattle exported by sea is inhumane.
“They are only exported for breeding purposes, but will eventually be culled,” said Will Appelbe of SAFE.
Trading was halted after the incident, but the Ministry of Primary Industries has allowed the practice to continue.
“We have a vet on board, we have five other livestock people,” said MPI’s director of animal welfare Chris Rodwell.
“These animals will be cared for, fed properly and will arrive at their destination in the best conditions we can hope for.”

Three more ships are expected in the coming weeks, as another 16,000 head of cattle await quarantined across the country due to the delay.
