A homicide investigation is underway after a body was found in a burning car in a southern Auckland suburb overnight.
Police confirmed they were called to Alfriston Rd in Manurewa after fire services were called to the scene after a vehicle was reported on fire.
The incident occurred around 3 a.m.
Detective Inspector Chris Barry of the Manukau County Police said: “[Fire and Emergency NZ] he attended, extinguished the fire and then the body was located. “
Police quickly arrived at the scene and placed a cordon in the area.
“Police [are] currently speaking with a man regarding this matter and he is assisting us with our investigations, “said Barry.
“Our priority is to identify the deceased and locate their relatives.”
Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area as there are detours from the intersections of Alfriston Rd and Mill Rd, along Alfriston Rd to the intersection with Brookby and Alfriston Ardmore Rd.
