Two people are in custody and an elementary school is not closed after armed police invaded a West Auckland suburb following a firearms incident.
Police were called after a firearm was reportedly discharged on Keegan Drive, Massey, shortly before noon.
Members of the Armed Criminal Brigade responded and two people were arrested. There are no reports of injuries at Massey’s property.
“Police are still working to determine the full set of circumstances from the previous incident and these investigations will continue this afternoon,” police said in a statement.
“No charges have been filed at this time. The cordons are expected to be lifted in due course.”
A spokesperson said there were curbs in a section of the road as police approached the property at the center of the investigation.
As a precautionary measure, the nearby Lincoln Heights School, which is on the same road, was closed due to proximity to the curbs, the spokesperson said.
From inside the school, Lincoln Heights principal Leisha Byrnes said that staff and students huddled in their classrooms and offices as the police operation continued.
He said the school had received a call from the police telling them to take the measure as a security measure given the proximity of the activity.
The police warned him around 2.15 pm that they could leave the confinement.
“Our kids have had a well-deserved run on the playground and we’re packing up, ready to go home,” Byrnes said around 3:00 pm.
“The police did an amazing job to the point where we completely forgot. They did an amazing job.”
Parents were kept informed about the unfolding situation through the school’s Facebook page and via text message.
A spokeswoman for St John confirmed that a team was on the scene to assist police in Massey’s call.
“We got the call at 12.05 pm. A rapid response unit has been deployed,” he said.
