Police released the name of a pedestrian who died in Tokoroa after being hit by a car.

It was Keith Robert Roebuck, 70, from New Plymouth.

Roebuck died after an accident on State Highway 1 in Tokoroa at midnight Saturday.

A second pedestrian was injured in the accident.

Investigations into the circumstances of the accident were ongoing and a police spokeswoman said it was too early to speculate on the possible factors or what may have caused the accident.

She said everyone had a role to play in keeping the roads safe.

“It is up to each user of public roads to pay absolute attention to what they do when they drive, drive or cross the street.

“As a driver, the decisions you make affect not only you and those in your vehicle, but everyone else on the road around you as well.”

He said they expected people to drive safely within the speed limit set by law or slower depending on conditions.

“Everyone in the car should wear a seatbelt … we urge you to drive according to conditions, wear a seatbelt, do not drive while tired or after drinking or using drugs, and put away your cell phone.”
