Two people died and several others were injured in a knife attack in France.

French counterterrorism prosecutors are investigating a knife attack on a church in the Mediterranean city of Nice that killed at least two people and injured several.

The prosecution and national police said an investigation was opened into an attack with a terrorist connection following the stabbing on Thursday.

The exact motive for the attack was unclear, but it comes as France is on high alert for terrorist acts amid tensions over the publication of cartoons of the Muslim prophet Muhammad and after two other recent attacks.

French police said two people were killed and others injured.

The attacker was arrested after the attack on Thursday morning (local time) and taken to a nearby hospital after being injured during his arrest, a police officer said.

He was believed to be acting alone, the official said. She was not authorized to be named publicly.

The mayor of the city, Christian Estrosi, tweeted: “I am in the place with the [police] who arrested the author of the attack.

“I confirm that everything suggests a terrorist attack on the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Nice.”

The lower house of parliament suspended a debate on new virus restrictions and observed a moment of silence for the victims.
