Police have released the image of a man who allegedly cut down pōhutukawa trees on a street in Auckland.

Police said they were called to Harborside Drive in Karaka around 6:48 p.m. Sunday after reports of a man cutting down trees with a chainsaw.

When they arrived, the man and his associates were gone, fallen trees on the trail.

The trees were mature miniature pōhutukawa that had been growing on the street for many years.

This afternoon the police released a picture of the alleged offender.

The alleged assailant has been described by the police as a European man between 30 and 40 years old, with a solid complexion.

He has dark goatee hair and was wearing a black T-shirt, shorts, and wellies. At the time he wore a light-colored chainsaw on his shoulder.

“We appeal to anyone who may have looked like him or the people he was with to come forward to assist in our investigation. We also ask residents to review their CCTV footage to see if this man can be seen,” he said County Inspector Tony Wakelin. South Manukau Police.

Police acknowledged that the image “is not very clear,” but hopes that someone will recognize the man.
