Black Caps closer Matt Henry has been banned from all cricket for up to six weeks after breaking his thumb during a training session in Canterbury on Monday.

Henry suffered the fracture when he received a blow to his right hand while hitting the nets.

“Unfortunately, Matt got hit on the tip of his right thumb while hitting the net,” Canterbury physio Tim Dovbysh said.

“Matt had an X-ray immediately after training which confirmed the fracture.

“He will need a temporary break from bowling, but he will still add value to the team in practice and start bowling when he can.”

Newly hired batter Tyler Lortan has been added to Canterbury for this week’s Plunket Shield clash with Wellington in the absence of Henry.
