Two people arrested after firearms incident near Waikeria prison

Two people are in custody following an incident in Waikeria this afternoon.

A shot was reportedly fired on local property at around 3:45 p.m.

The Armed Criminal Squad, a unit of dogs and the police helicopter responded.

A man and a woman fled the scene before the police arrived.

They were located at another nearby property around 7pm.

An ambulance was seen arriving and crossing the cordon.

There were curbs on the roads on Waikeria Rd and traffic was jammed along State Highway 3.

Vehicles traveling westward along Waikeria Rd were stopped and searched before they could advance through the cordon.

Those in traffic, mostly highway residents, got out of their vehicles and stood on the side of the road, talking to each other, while they waited.

The cordon of the highway was lifted around 7:30 p.m.
