One-day-old baby dies after dog attack in Hamilton

A newborn baby attacked by a dog in a Hamilton home died at Waikato Hospital.

The baby, believed to be only one day old, was critically injured in the incident around 7 p.m. Sunday, in the Enderley suburb of Hamilton.

The baby was rushed to Waikato Hospital by St John’s ambulance and was in critical condition in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Monday night.

Police confirmed Stuff on Tuesday the baby had died overnight.

The sex of the baby and the breed of the dog are unknown.

In a statement Monday, Hamilton City Council Animal Control Manager Susan Stanford said police had contacted her staff shortly after the incident.

“Staff picked up the dog and he is now secured at the council’s animal control facility,” he said.

“The ongoing police investigation will inform other decisions about the animal.

“This is a traumatic time for everyone involved and our thoughts are with the families and individuals involved.”

Death has been referred to the coroner.
