Labor Day weekend toll: driver dies after accident in Tokomaru

A driver died last night after an accident in Tokomaru, Horowhenua.

Two vehicles collided at the intersection of Makerua Road and Williams Road around 11:30 pm yesterday.

The driver and sole occupant of a vehicle died at the scene.

A passenger in the second vehicle suffered moderate injuries.

Police say investigations are underway into the circumstances of the accident.

Meanwhile, at least a dozen people were injured in a three-car accident on State Highway 5, northeast of Taupo.

The accident happened shortly before 11 a.m. this morning.

Police say those involved have moderate to severe injuries and have been taken to Rotorua Hospital.

The path is now open again.

This year’s Labor Day weekend toll has already exceeded last year in the first 24 hours, and the latest accident raised the toll now to six.

This past Labor Day weekend, only one person died on the roads.

The highway toll for the long weekend ends at 6 a.m. M. From Tuesday.
