There are five new cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand today, the Ministry of Health announced.

No new cases have been reported in the community.

Now another case has been recovered, which means that the total number of active cases is 74.

Three of the cases are of isolated international fishing crews in Christchurch.

Thirty-two fishermen have tested positive for the virus and are in quarantine.

The three new cases were tested on day nine because they had previously been in close contact with other confirmed cases.

People are urged to wear masks on public transport, even though it is no longer mandatory.

One of the two remaining cases reported on Monday was already in the Auckland quarantine facility because they are a family member of a positive case that has recently returned.

The other case is a recent returnee who arrived from Ethiopia via Dubai and tested positive on the third day of his stay in controlled isolation.

There were no new Covid cases on Sunday and one case recovered in managed isolation.

The total number of confirmed cases is now 1,584.

Auckland Maritime Cases

Last Sunday, a man who works on ships in Taranaki and Auckland was confirmed as the latest community case of coronavirus.

Later, two crew members from the same ship tested positive for Covid-19.

Initial genome sequencing showed that the Auckland Harbor Worker virus strain had never been registered in New Zealand.

On Monday, the Health Ministry said it had preliminary genome sequencing results for the two cases linked to the initial worker, showing that all three cases had an identical form of the virus.

The ministry said this was “further proof that their infections come from a common source.”

The three workers were on board the ship Sofrana Surville.

Three other crew members tested positive upon arrival in Brisbane after leaving New Zealand.

Australian authorities were performing genome sequencing in these cases; those results were not yet known.

Long weekend tests

Testing continued at a steady level in Auckland over the holiday weekend, with 478 people swabbed at the seven community testing centers in the region.

Seven community testing centers remain open Labor Day: Northcote Community Testing Center, Northcare Accident and Medical, Whānau House in Henderson, Western Springs Community Testing Center, Whānau Ora Community Clinic in Wiri, Ōtara Community Testing Center and North Harbor Stadium parking lot at Albany.

The tests are also available in Auckland at urgent care clinics and general offices.

On Sunday, laboratories completed 3,038 tests, bringing the total number of tests completed to date to 1,070,181.

Auckland Community Cluster

The new cases over the weekend came amid a new community group in Auckland.

A dock worker, two of his work contacts and one of his domestic contacts, who works at the Westpac NZ head office, have all tested positive for the virus and are in isolation.

Up to 120 gym-goers can be considered casual contacts of one of the cases after entering the gym on the same day.

The infected man visited Snap Fitness Browns Bay while infected on Saturday, October 17.
