It provoked a strong message from the police on Saturday night.
“Police are strongly calling on motorists to behave safely on our roads after a devastating start to the Labor weekend,” says Acting Superintendent of the National Highway Police Manager, Gini Welch.
“Our frontline personnel have witnessed four fatal accidents across the country since the official weekend period began at 4pm yesterday.
“We have also responded to a number of other serious accidents that have resulted in significant injuries to those involved.”
Welch said that while it is too early to discuss the cause of the crashes, police will continue to “relentlessly remind people” that everyone must do their part to keep our roads safe.
“With high volumes of traffic on our roads this long weekend, we implore you to keep your speed down, pay attention to your surroundings and conditions, and watch your following distances to make sure you arrive alive,” says Welch.
“Most people behave safely on the roads most of the time, but it only takes a risky decision or a moment of inattention to cause a tragedy. Ultimately, the actions of each driver and cyclist make a difference. “
In a tweet, the police say: “We need to improve New Zealand.”
“Slow down, buckle up, leave the phone alone and don’t drive in trouble. It really is that simple.”
