Police are asking the public for information after an Auckland teenager was the victim of a brutal and random attack.

The boy was assaulted and beaten by four men in West Auckland while jogging, a police spokesman said.

The attack occurred at Spargo Reserve in Massey on Thursday and left the 17-year-old with more than 40 stitches in his mouth and upper lip.

No arrests have been made and police were encouraging anyone with information, or who might have seen something suspicious in the area on Thursday, to call 105 citing the file number 201023/8330.

The Herald of New Zealand reported that the boy’s mother was now considering moving her family out of Auckland.

The boy had called his mother to tell her that he would be out for a run around 1 p.m. Thursday.

He called again 10 minutes later, screaming and crying because he had been “beaten” at the family’s local park.

The mother has lived in the area for 46 years and said she had never heard of anything like this happen before.

The random attack was apparently witnessed by at least one woman, as the boy recalled.

He didn’t see any of his attackers, but was able to hear that a woman was trying to help him, before leaving after feeling insecure.

“I spoke to my partner in Christchurch,” the mother told Herald of New Zealand. “I am thinking of packing my children and leaving. There is nothing here. They are not safe. “
