The cub, Sia, was likely tied up before receiving more than 10 shots from an air rifle.
A puppy has been seriously injured after receiving more than 10 shots with a compressed air rifle in Waikato.
The Waikato District Council is requesting information after finding the dog in Whatawhata with injuries to her head, legs and body.
The council’s animal control team leader Tracey Oakes said the dog, named Sia, will likely need multiple surgeries for her injuries.
The nature and location of the injuries suggest that the dog was tied up before he was shot, Oakes said.

“We received reports of a stray dog living under someone’s hut on Māori Point Road in Whatawhata.
“When we went to the property we found a young puppy, less than three months old, with [air rifle] buckshot to the face and muzzle, and other head injuries. “
Animal Control is requesting information in the Waikato district.
“We have told nearby residents so they can keep a close eye on their pets, because we would hate to see this happen to another animal.
“We are also asking people to let us know if they have any information that can help us find who is responsible for this cruelty, so that we can pass it on to the relevant authorities.”
The dog is currently being cared for by the Waikato SPCA.
Waikato SPCA area manager Margaret Rawiri said the behavior was “cruel.”
“This is hideous behavior that no animal should have to go through.”
The pellets were deeply embedded in the cub’s wounds, Rawiri said.
“She has seven pellets inside her, which will need to be removed, but we are not sure of the damage caused by the pellets.”
Rawiri said the pup’s condition would depend on the outcome of the surgeries and the ability to remove the deeply embedded granules.
