Police attend a car accident Thursday on Waimea Rd.

One person was rushed to hospital in critical condition after a car accident on Waimea Rd in Nelson.

A police spokeswoman said the accident was reported at 1.50 p.m. after a car ran off the road and crashed into a bench in front of the SPCA.

It was unknown how many occupants were in the vehicle at the time.

St John’s spokesman Gerard Campbell said a patient had been transferred from the scene to Nelson Hospital in critical condition.

Fire and Emergency NZ had also been called to the scene.

The highway was closed until 3 p.m. Thursday with detours in place.

Police were investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Earlier Thursday morning there was a two-car collision in the southbound lane of Waimea Rd.

No one was injured in the accident, which occurred between Tukuka St and Boundary Rd at around 7.40 a.m.
