A Melbourne man was forced to use a rake to hold one of the world’s deadliest snakes for half an hour before help arrived, after she was caught eating her birds.
The tiger snake managed to find its way into an aviary in the south-east Melbourne suburb of Langwarrin and killed three birds before being captured.
By the time the owner realized what was happening, the snake had already eaten two parakeets and killed a cockatoo.
Barry Goldsmith, of Victoria, of the snake hunter, was called in to remove the snake and when he arrived he found the owner of the house immobilizing the animal with a rake.
“When I got there, there was a guy in the aviary and he had a steel rake holding the snake by the head,” Goldsmith wrote on Facebook.
“He said ‘I’m glad you’re here. I’ve been holding the snake for half an hour like this!’
“It goes without saying that when I took the rake off him, this little guy went nuts, flattened his head to the dimensions of a cigarette paper, and proceeded to go out of his way to give me a little kiss.”
Goldsmith was finally able to capture the snake and release it to a different area later that day.
Tiger snakes are often ranked in the top 10 deadliest snakes in the world and are often found off the southeast coast of Australia.
“In Victoria, tiger snakes can be found in a large area of the state,” states the Wildlife Victoria website.
“They are generally absent in parts of the state with less rainfall and are frequently found in the suburbs around Melbourne, particularly in the western suburbs.”
Tiger snakes are extremely venomous and can be aggressive if confronted, although they will generally choose to flee if given the option.
“When they feel threatened, they pick themselves up off the ground and flatten their head and neck, almost like a cobra,” Wildlife Victoria said.
