Dame Valerie Adams is looking to accelerate her preparations for next year’s Tokyo Olympics.
Dame Valerie Adams has changed coaches as she prepares for the Tokyo Olympics next year.
The 36-year-old shot put star has decided to team up with Dale Stevenson, who also trains Tom Walsh.
Adams, a four-time world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist, had previously been coached by Athletics New Zealand’s High Performance Director Scott Goodman, having worked with him since the 2016 Olympics.
Stevenson is based in Christchurch and Adams plans to spend four days a week training in the city.

Adams, who is looking to go to his fifth Olympics, revealed the news on his Instagram page.
“What a year 2020 has been with so much uncertainty,” he wrote.
“It has been tough for all of us and it has not been easy as an athlete trying to train so ultimately nothing has been frustrating.
“So I need to get out of my comfort zone and change things up a bit so that I can be the best version of myself in Tokyo.
“So I’m very excited for Dale Stevenson to lead my program and to have the opportunity to coach on his team.
“I want to thank Scott Goodman for his continued help and support over the years, especially during my pregnancies and return to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
“I am grateful that he will continue to travel with me in his role as Director of HP and, in particular, providing support when he is in Auckland.
“A big thank you to my husband Gabe, my babies Kimoana and Kepaleli and my mother-in-law for their unconditional love and support. I couldn’t do it without all of you.
“Tokyo is 9 months away … let’s sign up and do this.”
Adams last competed in an international multi-sport event at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018, where she finished second behind Danniel Thomas-Dodd of Jamaica.
