Alfred Ngaro has said goodbye to Parliament after nine years, with a dawn prayer and a performance of the national anthem on the steps of Parliament.
Ngaro is not back in Parliament after the dismal result of the National elections and was unable to win the Te Atatu electorate seat.
Standing on the steps of Parliament’s entrance this morning, he called for prayer for the nation.
“So Lord, as the watchman here today, I sign my last day here and pray for our nation.
“I pray for these statements [in God Defend New Zealand, the national anthem] that we would do to our nation as well. “
Ngaro’s position on the list was too low for him to return.
He spoke about being called to defend his faith in 2018 when protests came to Parliament over the decision to remove Jesus Christ from parliamentary prayer.
At the 2018 rally, Ngaro spoke to the crowd and asked them to sing along with him saying, “The footprint of faith is deep and wide in this land.”
This morning, Ngaro said: “The Holy Spirit spoke to me very clearly.
“Because I have chosen you for a time like this, to defend the name of Jesus as a banner to the nations and also to be a sentinel on the tower, from Ezekiel chapter 33.
“So for the last three years I have walked this parliament ground, inside and out. I have prayed, I have interceded with the Lord.
“And in doing that, I have seen what the Lord has in His heart for this nation and its people.”
In 2019, Ngaro was proposed to leave National to set up his own Christian party.
The committed Christian was the subject of intense speculation after revelations that he had approached national leader Simon Bridges with the idea of forming a values-based Christian party.
“You will have seen in the last 10 days that I was approached to consider starting a faith-based match,” Ngaro said in a statement at the time.
“This was always something I was considering and nothing more than that. The National Party is my home and where I want to stay.”
Speaking to reporters later, Ngaro said that he had analyzed and supported the party’s values and leadership.
“The values are very clear, it speaks of loyalty to the country and the Crown. It speaks of citizenship for all people and equal opportunities.”
