On Wednesday morning’s show and in a subsequent Newshub op-ed, Garner announced that he is keeping his word.
“Here I come veganism. I’m going to try this,” he wrote.
“A man has only his word. Then, yes, I will embark on this ordeal.”
But it seems that he will not do it alone. Emails of support flooded the Newshub inbox on Monday and Tuesday from members of the vegan community offering advice for Garner, with many saying that their own decision to go vegan was the best they ever made.
New Zealand Vegetarian Society spokesman Philip McKibbin told Newshub that Garner has made the right decision and believes he will rise to the challenge.
“Veganism is better for animals, better for the planet and, of course, better for our health,” McKibbin said.
“Fifteen percent of kiwis avoid meat most or all of the time, and that number seems to be on the rise. The future is vegan.
“I don’t know, I think Duncan could probably do it. I guess we’ll see if he’s up to it, won’t he? If you need any advice, you can always call us.
McKibbin even gave Garner some advice.
“It’s mainly about eliminating animal products and eating more of the good stuff: legumes, grains, greens, fruits, nuts. It’s also a good idea to think about vitamin B12. Veganism is easy once you get the hang of it.”
