All Blacks running back and Hurricanes co-captain TJ Perenara has confirmed that he will miss next year’s Super Rugby season and head to Japan on a short-term game contract.
Perenara has signed with the Osaka-based NTT DoCoMo Red Hurricanes and will be joining the club later in the year.
It will be a significant loss for the Hurricanes, but the 28-year-old insists it is not the end of his playing time in New Zealand.
In a video posted on social media, Perenara paid tribute to fans of the hurricanes.
“I just wanted to say a massive hello to all the Hurricanes fans here in New Zealand for the past ten years. I’ve gone to work every day to put on a show for you.
“It doesn’t mean it’s the end for me (here in New Zealand). I’m looking forward to an exciting challenge in Japan … with a new group of players, a new group of coaches and I’m really excited about that.” adventure for me and my family. “
Hurricanes coach Jason Holland said that while Perenara would be missed, he left with the team’s blessings.
“TJ has been the heart and soul of this team for many years, yet I am sure he has not played his last game in the Hurricanes jersey.”
Holland says the departure will open doors for others on the team.
“We are very fortunate to have two quality running backs already in our midst. The loss of senior players creates exciting opportunities for others, and we look forward to seeing Jamie Booth and Jonathan Taumateine prosper.”
New Zealand Rugby’s head of professional rugby, Chris Lendrum, added: “TJ has been a loyal and longtime New Zealand Rugby player for a decade, so he has the opportunity to take a break from playing here to have the The experience of playing in Japan is positive for him and his family. Lendrum said that NZR would start contract discussions with Perenara management in due course, regarding his return to New Zealand.
Perenara will travel with the All Blacks to Sydney on Sunday and then join his new team from Japan at the end of the Rugby Championship.
